There were many reasons pieces were never stamped with an artists initials ,.925 or sterling silver. Back in the days Native Americans and their tribes never planned on letting their jewelry outside of the family or tribe and members of their families or tribes knew each others work so there was no need to stamp the piece. Also, many tribal members were buried with their jewelry and artisans did not want their initials on a piece that was buried with the owner. Simply, it was superstitious for them. Also, some artisans just did not have the money to buy a special stamp to mark their pieces. As hard times hit many Natives, they had to sell or trade their prize possessions. For some, the artists did not want members of the trading post to know who was receiving cash so stamps were not used. One of the best things about owning a piece of vintage or pawn Native American jewelry is that you know it originated from a Native artist and his family and it was worn by some one were the piece held great meaning to them. There are other reasons but to know the difference between grades of sterling silver and what is authentic Native American, the materials and tribe from which the designs originate from takes experience but it is against the law to list an item as authentic Native American if it is not. We do not care to carry any other pieces other than Native American. If it is or in question we distinguish so.
