CWS is from the coastal mountains, desert or the coastal areas of California. This particular sage is from the mountain areas of California. This is a large leaf sage which is prized for its rich aromatic properties. It even has the smell of the mountains as it burns! This sage has the one of the strongest scents and burns with a rich smoke. The use of sage is for healing. The smoke is used to bless, cleanse and heal the person or object being "smudged". Sage is used to "wash off" the outside world when one enters ceremony or other sacred space. Objects are likewise washed off with sage medicine smoke to rid them of unwanted influences.
There are actually 18 different varieties of California white sage. Each is different in it’s own way, from the leaves to the stems to the flowers to the aroma. Some are better grown in dirt, clay or sand depending on the regions of mountains, coastal areas or deserts of California.
